Happy New Year! I hope you had a fantastic Christmas, a brilliant time with your family and friends and a relaxing break from work!
This is my 2nd blog and much like the 1st, there’s been quite a bit of procrastination, given I’ve been meaning to write it since early December. My PA – also Emma (I’m not talking about myself in the 3rd person – that’d be weird) even pencilled in 2 hours in my diary on 21st, but I found myself in the Jenners restaurant, enjoying an Empire biscuit whilst colour-coding my sent items.
So, 2018. Do you know what – it was pretty good. There was a lot of change, some challenges/hurdles and a lot of hard work but looking back, I have to say, I’m pretty chuffed with 2018. Loads happened and here’s a brief summary of my highlights and challenges:
Highlights…sales up 19% year on year. 2 new mandated clients successfully rolled out. Getting properly back under the skin of our key clients personally – what we’re doing for them and how we can make the relationships even stronger – I’m thoroughly enjoying it and ultimately it’s the most important job in in the business so the closer I am to clients the better, I reckon – hopefully they agree. ;o). Finally we have a proper marketing/PR plan in place – thanks to the expert help of Four PR, Elsa Jack and Mike McGrail – we’re definitely making progress. Good progress with our new client tech solution. The launch of our exciting ExecSpace Virtual Reality product, in partnership with Captured Realities. And, the icing on the cake – we have heating in the toilets! It was Baltic last year!
Challenges…couple of key staff changes. The team was static for a long time so I guess it’s to be expected and I guess change is good for any growing business. Progress with our new client tech solution – everything always takes longer than we’d like, but we’ll get there, because we always do, we just need to work hard and be patient.
So, all in all, a pretty good year and great to finish it off with a lovely break when we shut the office for the first time, until 3rd January. Everyone is so rammed, it’s important we take the time to relax and spend proper quality time with those we care about the most. It does us good and I don’t know about you guys but I’m personally raring to go again. As I walked to work yesterday morning I genuinely don’t think I’ve ever gone into a year so optimistic! Tonnes of great stuff happening and starting to come together which I’ll share throughout the year. Team is good, leadership is strong, resilient and driven and I personally feel happy, calm, strong and up for really nailing it in 2019. Focus will be on keeping our clients really happy, pushing accountability and ownership throughout the team, driving the tech forwards and putting our all into a few key tender opportunities.
I suspect like last year, it’ll be full of ups and down, the stuff we worry about won’t ever happen (my mum’s been telling me this for 40 years), stuff we never even considered will knock us for six or pleasantly surprise us – likely in equal measures. So, I guess – let’s be happy, have fun doing it, not waste time worrying about stuff and give it our absolute best.
Happy Friday! If you haven’t already watched it – check out Luther Series 5. Health warning – you will be scared walking to work – I practically sprinted along William Street this morning. On the plus side – most exercise I’ve had since November!
